Blanche, Duchess of Lancaster, was born around 1345 and is most known for being the wife of John of Gaunt and mother of King Henry IV. After her death, the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, was commissioned to write The Book of the Duchess, which described Gaunt’s mourning for his wife in the tale of a Knight grieving for his lost love. In the poem, Chaucer describes the duchess as “bothe fair and bright” and the “cheef patron of beautee”.

This beautiful needlework portrayal of the duchess was created using wool stitch on linen during the Arts & Crafts and Pre-Raphaelite movements. These movements, which flourished between about 1880 and 1920, stood for traditional craftsmanship and often used medieval/romantic styles of design evident in this stunning depiction of Blanche.
