The original 18th century panel was made using the crewel embroidery technique on linen to illustrate a design of organic flowing branches running the length of the piece, decorated with large ornate leaves that are surrounded by smaller floral and leaf motifs. Crewel embroidery is often associated with England in the 17th/18th centuries and much like this piece, motifs frequently used in the period included coiling stems and detached flower designs. These embroideries were worked in wool and were used in the home to brighten the surroundings.
