This Art Deco appliqué work uses intricate embroidery stitches to depict black dancers dressed in fashion of the 1920/30s, performing on a Parisian cabaret stage with lights, curtains and a large potted sunflower. Jazz was introduced first in France by African American soldiers during World War I, when troops of black soldiers marched their lively music through 2,000 miles of farm villages and big concert halls across France. After the war, many jazz musicians, as well as dancers and entertainers, returned, settled and delighted cabarets and club audiences in Paris.
